Our Purpose

Many adults experience significant dental problems throughout their lives. Many of them can be prevented through basic oral hygiene practices. Practices such as regular dental appointments and home care. According to the CDC , In 2009 data shown that 62 percent of adults visited the dentist. The majority who visited the dentist experienced various dental problems. Problems that could have been prevented. Today, not too many people take their dental hygiene seriously. It is our greatest concern that people do not grasp the information that is needed in order for them to live lives free from dental issues. This website was designed in partnership with Deme, a cosmetic dental office located in center city Philadelphia. The goal was to allow people to have access to information that applied to the needs of their dental concerns. Dr. Thomas George, owner of Deme and Jalen Smith, a student at Science Leadership Academy collaborated with each other to reflect on the issues that were observed at Deme. They felt as if it was important to address these common issues to people who have struggled with it in their daily lives. From the positive feedback that was received from past survey's and interviews they've thought it was a great idea to start this initiative.

Jalen C. Smith, a senior from Science Leadership Academy had an interest in dentistry at a young age. Having the exposure to various dental treatments and family connections has inspired him to work in the dental field. Dr. Samuel Morris, Jalen's grandfather was  the backbone to his interest in becoming an Orthodontist. Although Dr. Morris was never a doctor in orthodontics, before his death he aspired to be an orthodontist.

Unlucky from a sudden death he never lived to fullfill his dreams to pursue his future career in orthodontics. Throughout  Jalen's high school career he has interned at Deme, a cosmetic dental office privately owned by Dr. Thomas George. Together, they both designated there time and efforts to fullfill the needs of people who were experiencing issues with their oral health.

With the skills and knowledge he learned from his experience with Deme Jalen looks forward to graduating from Science Leadership Academy and attending Franklin & Marshall College in the fall. He also plans on on taking pre dental  classes at the University of North Carolina, Chapel HIll for the next three summers.
